Beyond that there’s a ton of original universe building that I loved like the very steampunk-esque tech culture. There’s even a symbiotic species kind of like the Trill and lots and lots of wormholes. In fact, it has a surprising number of parallels to Star Trek’s DS9 like the Galactic Commons which is similar to The Federation, except humans play a much smaller part than they’d like. The author addresses ableism, sentient rights, interspecies relationships, body modding, the horrors of eugenics, and a whole slew of ethical questions and then leaves you feeling weirdly wholesome just like the end of any good Star Trek episode. The Wayfarer Series creates a safe space in SF/F for those of us who have been asking for it for a long time. Based on that alone, I highly recommend it. The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet is not violent, racist, sexist, ableist, homophobic, transphobic or otherwise. This book is almost entirely machismo free, there is a character who calls other species slurs, but is reprimanded about it and sort of put on the back burner for most of the book. A lot of reviewers are upset about the lack of plot, to me it reads like a slice of life Syfy and I really enjoyed it for what it was. The first thing I have to say about this book is that it is character-driven.

That’s such an incredibly organic bias, the idea that your squishy physical existence is some sort of pinnacle that all programs aspire to. Granted, I think I do, but that doesn’t mean all of us do.
